2 tips guaranteed to improve peace of mind

rock time. that’s the term my bff and I coined for quiet, reflective moments on a rock in a peaceful environment. essential elements: the rock, two open hearts, nature, our book of values and wisdom (Bible), a journal and sunshine (sunshine…beautiful sunshine…we all know how refreshing turning your face toward the warmth of the sun can be). man, would i love a little rock time with my bff…i miss you, lori!

nature will teach valuable lessons about peaceful existence…just watch. the bird in the photo above has stopped for a few moments of quiet reflection. he’ll be hurrying off soon enough but for this moment…just quiet, peaceful, rest.

it is very easy to find the heart and mind troubled, disturbed, and dis-quieted. goodness, the entire world around us uses our heart and minds to press us to dissatisfaction, longing, and desire. marketers count on the fact that the heart and mind will long for more and present us every message possible to convince us that we aren’t enough, don’t have enough, we aren’t smart enough, and that we lack “something”. think about he story of the garden of eden…that is exactly what the serpent used on eve. basically, “yeah, you have it pretty good. the garden is ok but it’s really not all that great because you don’t have….” boom! dissatisfaction hit her heart and thirst and longing for more filled it. it worked then…it works now. i need more money. i need more education. i need a better job or boss. i need a better husband. i need more blog readers. THEN i can be happier. what a lie. talk about throwing your heart and mind into a frenzy…

i have 2 tips that are guaranteed to improve your peace of mind. remember, i don’t believe in magic wands. i believe in wisdom and good ole elbow grease. rolling your sleeves up, looking at the pain and applying deliberate (on purpose) and purposeful (truly beneficial) action. would you like to hear what they are?

Tip #1 : fix (focus) your mind on these things. yip (i love NZ slang), discipline. de-clutter your mind. out with the old-in with the new.

  • whatever is true (real~ genuine~ actual)
  • whatever is worthy of reverence (deep respect)
  • whatever is honourable (respectable ~ reputable ~ honest)
  • whatever is just (quality of being fair and reasonable)
  • whatever is pure (clean ~ clear~ absolute)
  • whatever is lovely and lovable (exquisitely beautiful ~ fair ~ inspiring ~deserving of admiration)
  • whatever is kind (nice~ good~ gentle)
  • whatever is winsome (engaging~ attractive)
  • whatever is gracious (courteous~ merciful~ benevolent~ benign)
  • virtue (merit~ goodness)
  • excellence (outstanding quality)

step one: fix (focus) your mind on this list of things by thinking about them, weighing your thoughts against them, and consider them.

step two: practice. any new skill requires practice. so -you practice. practice. practice until these things fill your mind and thoughts more naturally than worry, frustration, anger and whatever else keeps your mind agitated. while you are practicing, take notice of how your body, soul and spirit react to each type of thoughts. try this: think of a situation that really got you angry. rehearse it for a minute in your mind. did you feel all the reactions? pretty bad…negative. now think of the happiest moment you can remember in your life: rehearse it in your mind. did you feel all the good reactions? if i think about holding my daughter or one of my grand babies for the first time…i involuntarily smile. i can’t help it. those moments were so joyous to me. both sets of thoughts cause a reaction in my heart and mind. i don’t enjoy the negative reactions but i am uplifted by the good, positive ones.

result: peace(untroubled, undisturbed well-being)- will be with you. tip #1…can immediately improve your peace of mind for the moment. with practice it will improve your peace of mind consistently.

Tip #2: be content. be satisfied to the point of where i am not disturbed, troubled, anxious, or uneasy. two sets of circumstances present themselves in our lives…lack and abundance.

  • lack – living humbly in straitened (narrow, lean) circumstances. this one makes our skin crawl. no one wants to go without. in fact, having the basic needs of food, shelter and clothing are imperative to survival. when faced with this circumstance our instinct for self preservation kicks in and moves us toward ways to survive.
  • plenty-living well-fed, having sufficient supply with enough to spare. this one makes life so much easier. we enjoy and revel in this circumstance. it is not hard to have peace of mind in this circumstance. it does not guarantee peace of mind though. there are many examples of wealthy, miserable people.

the key is to find the undisturbed place for your heart and mind through contentment. i was amazed how content my heart was following the corporate take -over of our company a few years ago. yes, yes…there was anger and grieving and crying. i am human. lol. i told you in my overcoming addiction blog that i have had many negative situations to face in my lifetime. i sat with the emotion and shock when we discovered there was no way out…this situation was inevitable. once i had taken the time i needed to get my head around what i could not change, felt the pain and released it (crying, praying, screaming…there was a wide range of emotion)-i had to settle my heart. my heart was disquieted and disturbed. i did not want to live my life long term in this state. i enjoy peace of mind. i crave peace of mind. i began to go through the list above…

  • what is true? my life is not over. i can get up and start again. true!
  • what is worthy of reverence? the God-given blessings that i had enjoyed while i had that business…living in plenty…and that now i did not want to be a “brat” about difficult circumstances. respect!
  • what is lovely and kind? mercy. let me tell you right now…i had to grab hold of my heart and mind and inform them both that i fully intended to show mercy. non-negotiable…non-negotiable. revenge is an ugly, ugly trap. eats at you like cancer, too.
  • and on and on down the list i went.

it was a painful time. however, in the end we were debt-free. we didn’t have anything. we didn’t owe anything, either. i found myself very content without financial pressure. in the midst of that trauma, both my husband and i determined that we would never walk under the bondage of debt again. we were able to find contentment for what we had, when we had it ,in order to preserve that peace of mind. we began to practice lots of positive behaviours to maintain contentment and the resulting peace of mind.

contentment is a very difficult. practice. practice looking at and seeing what you are, what you have and where you are at the moment with respect and honor. decide that there is a right time for everything in life (under heaven). learn the lessons. lack teaches us to be resourceful and frugal; to appreciate and develop better stewardship. it helps us be empathetic to the needs of others and addresses arrogance. it’s not fun but it can be powerful.

i end up eating my own words sometimes, so it’s important to make sure they are sweet.

words are powerful. i never believed the childhood chant, “stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. i may have chanted the saying a time or two but i was soon finding a quiet place to release the tears that were pooling in my eyes. you might say, “yeah, but that’s because you’re a big girl!”

the real truth is that words are creative and give us power. Genesis tells us that God created with His words. you might think, “yeah, but that was God.” or maybe you don’t believe it at all. i have never created as magnificent a creation as i see described in the creation story, yet i have seen my words (and the words of others) create. have i got your attention?

you and i will never really understand the impact the words (we have let come out of our mouths) have had on the lives of others. i see some pretty dramatic examples in the news concerning texting/social media bullying that lead to suicide. i am angered. the bullying words create an atmosphere in that person’s heart. whether it’s the seed or the end result of the suicide. i didn’t read the text, i didn’t witness the suicide yet the news (spoken words or written) have, firstly, created a belief. i believed the story to be true. secondly. those words produced a reaction in my heart. then, if i allow them to, they can create an action on my  part; i might join the cause to stamp out bullying for those around me, i might act harshly toward someone i perceive as a bully in my circle of influence or i might pass the information on. all because someone spoke words in the vicinity of my heart.

we women love a good novel. give me a romance novel and i will be dreaming, swooning, crying and living a characters life in my mind. novels are lovely entertainment. i enjoy Francine Rivers writings. Redeeming Love is one of my favourites. it’s a story of unconditional love. reading a novel will feed the hope in the heart that my mundane, painful or difficult life (if that is the case at the time) is not the only option. it can cause my heart to hope. the sad part is it can also cause my heart to fantasize until it reaches a place of discontent.

i’ve learned with one phrase i can withdraw respect from my husband. he is a respected businessman. he is a good friend. however, my words used unwisely can in one fail swoop make him forget for the moment that he is respected. respect is vital to men. it’s a power i hold in my tongue. a weapon or tool. sadly, i’ve used it, too. despicable, right? be careful, don’t judge me…i’d be safe to say, you have shamefully used that power as well.

it’s easier to tame wild animals than our words.

we love inspirational words, quotes and compliments. they feed our heart and souls. they are like the sunlight…warm and nourishing.

i don’t believe that anyone wakes up in the morning with a plan to use their words to wound another person. maybe that makes me naïve. the search for significance, justice and self preservation lead down that path.

with power comes responsibility. if i can recognize that i possess this tool with such powerful potential, i need to take the responsibility seriously. i wouldn’t buy a chainsaw and not follow the safety instructions unless i want to leave myself or my family maimed. personally, i can not see a benefit to cutting off a hand, finger or worse. i don’t want to live with the results either. my life would so much more difficult to live if i couldn’t walk or didn’t have my thumb. in the same manner, my husband’s need for respect is as important to his well being and functionality. gossip (which is the tool we use to discredit someone’s character) can change a person’s ability to function as a friend, co-worker, parent, etc. you might think you words to be insignificant…unless you’ve ever been maimed yourself by the power of someone words and tried to function following the impact. however, the wounds of the heart are often hidden, different to physical wounds or amputations. when hidden, the responsibility can be denied or minimized. it takes an open, compassionate heart to look honestly at this responsibility and work to apply discipline.

safety instructions i find helpful:

  1. think before i speak. i know easier to say than do. i like the “t.h.i.n.k.” poster. ask myself: is it true, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind. by the time i’ve stopped and run through those 5 principles, i’m less likely to “spout” off something hurtful. holding my tongue is a discipline i can practice.
  2. this is my problem. i know, i know….sometimes people need to hear what we have to say. that makes it my problem. i’m a problem solver. remember when i talked to you about how hysteria discounts the issue? it applies here. how i say what needs to be said, can either cause people to tune me out or open up to solutions. my problem is understanding that my feelings are mine to own, my emotional reactions are my responsibility and the successful solution is within my power, if i am wise.
  3. speaking is a privilege. sharing my heart is a privilege not a right. i have a right to an opinion but sharing it is a gift. we get confused about the reality of the “right”. i have a right to my opinion! i have a “right” to freedom of speech. it’s a gift if someone i care about offers me the opportunity to share it with them. if i abuse my “right”, my privilege of speech and willing listeners might be withdrawn. i must use respect. seriously, if someone continuously abuses their right to speech in a hurtful way…i walk out of hearing distance pretty quickly.
  4. Do-over. i miss it sometimes. i say the wrong thing at the wrong time. i need the opportunity to re-do, or re-say what i’ve said. i can try again but if i’m not getting it right it’s time to stop. it’s pretty easy to tell with my husband because he will just say, “stop!”. basically, my communication is clearly not working and i need to take time to restructure my thoughts and words. it’s ok…again, the world will not end if i don’t get to “spill it” right then.
  5. respect. simple. i want respect…i need to offer respect. if i would react poorly to my words if someone else spoke them to me…i don’t need to use them. most often, i would never allow someone to say things to me that i am tempted to say. i can discipline myself better if i put the shoe on the other foot.
  6. use you words. in the movie, Step Mom, Susan Sarandon, tells her son, “use your words” when he’s frustrated and saying hurtful things. i liked it so i applied to my discipline list for myself. i want to make my words purposeful, healing, encouraging and inspirational. reminding myself that i have set that purpose for my life is effective.
  7. relationship first. people come into my life for a reason. i have a circle of influence. people i can impact. i also need to be influenced. i have things to learn. good working relationships are vital if i am going to influence or be influenced (mentored). relationships require building. i must remember to use the right building resources if i want it to have a good foundation. i can even influence strangers or people i might never meet again…i’d hate to think i left a hurtful footprint on their heart. i have the power to create beauty. our world needs it desperately.

i use these guidelines for myself. i am responsible for me, no one else. however, they can also be used as healthy boundaries for others who are not using the power of their words toward me in a respectful way. it requires that i explain my healthy boundaries for interaction. it allows me to keep myself safe from hurtful situations. i intend to hold myself to this standard but i am not a door mat. i respect myself too much to allow someone else to continually misuse their words at my expense. do-overs are granted. crossed boundaries offers me the opportunity to withdraw the privilege of hearing their words if they insist on continuing the behaviour. i can then respectfully let them know where i stand. no melt-down required.

today i am celebrating. it’s so great to stop…appreciate…celebrate. for those of you who read my blog yesterday, the trade delegate meeting/reception was sooooo fun! i had a great time. what in the world was I worried about? right? isn’t that how it goes? now, if you haven’t read yeaterday’s blog and you feel a little in the dark…guess what…you’ll have to read it. it’s not a blogging ploy. it will just catch you up.

today, i am celebrating simple pleasure. i love simple pleasure and in my heart i celebrate them in a big way. above is a picture of my grandson when he was younger with bubbles. kids celebrate the simplest of things. they clap, laugh, jump, scream. bring out a bottle of bubbles and there is no further reason necessary….the celebration begins. puts me to shame sometimes. when i get into my spoiled mode that wants the perfect celebration…i reflect on what will bring on celebration in the heart of a child and i’m reminded to keep it simple.

back to my celebration today. as challenged as i felt about this trade delegate meeting, i pushed through and attended. the group was much smaller and intimate than i anticipated. i met a new friend potential. i shared and they listened intently. i even tried to get a Chinese man, who spoke no English, to understand what i was saying (help)…and my husband did his thing…worked the room. i enjoyed watching him do what he loves to do…talk (completely new story…he’s quite the talker! lol). i was really adjusting my crown (photo a couple of blogs back…wink, wink) and walking out of that reception room like a boss. feeling on top of the world. i let that celebration spill over in to my day today.

in addition, i spent a lovely amount of time this morning having a coffee (that’s what we do in NZ to get together and visit) with a special friend. it was cold and rainy outside, yet my heart was warm and celebrating the special opportunity this girl-time produced. i love the smell of the coffee (yum…celebrate….breathe in that gorgeous aroma), a simple snack (avocado…OMG…one of my favs…on a new cracker…gotta get some), and a delightful, beautiful friend (loveliness personified…absolutely celebrate this lovely lady). joy. joy. joy. does the heart good. makes it sing.

do i need to spell out why we do what we do when we celebrate? the benefits of celebrating simple pleasures is so important. it lifts the soul. cheers the heart. makes the challenges of life (big and small) easier to bare. can you stop for a minute, look inside your heart and find a way to celebrate something simple like a child would. a shared cuppa (cup of…coffee, tea, anything), the company of a friend, your child/grandchild, a warm, soothing bath….to name a few. If not, grab a bottle of bubbles and see if it doesn’t just make your heart begin to sing!

here’s to overcoming challenges and celebrating simple pleasures…from the abundance of my heart today…i hope your heart will sing, dance and rejoice!
