Phoneography Challenge: Macro (Learning What My IPhone Can Do)

I was inspired this week by my new blogging friend, Janet, from This, That and The Other Thing. I had no idea that my Iphone would take macro photos…I know, I’m pretty shocking when it comes to technical knowledge. However, learning new things is one of the things that I really enjoy about the blogosphere.

When I saw Janet’s photo, followed by a few helpful tips that she offered (Thanks, Janet!) and a fresh morning rain, I ran outside with my IPhone and snapped a few photos. I was sceptical. Luckily, my IPhone did most of the work and Janet’s tips helped heaps.IMG_2067.JPG
IMG_2068.JPGI have an IPhone 4 but I think it did pretty well. The photos are a little grainy which is the only complaint I have ever had about my phone. So, I decided to grab my husband’s IPhone 5 and shot a few more photos to make a comparison. (Shhh, I was really trying to build a convincing case for an upgrade on my phone!)IMG_2069.JPG
IMG_2070.JPGMy husband is a marine farmer so he has an aqua-safe case that encases the phone which produced the yellow tint. Other than the coloration, the IPhone 5 is slightly clearer.

What do you think? Do I need a new phone? 😉

    • Thank you. My family in America all have Androids and normal photo quality is so much better than my Apple products. I was actually jealous of their phones for that reason. But I do like the Apple functionality better and the integration between phone, tablets and computer. Technology being what it is these days, I’d say there will be a way to get your Android phone to take macro photos.   5. Welcome to the challenge and the fun–I particularly like the fist two, which shows the clarity of the water droplets on the flowers. The iPhone 4 does just fine. Happy Photo Challenge. I just went from an iPhone 4s to a iPhone 6. Will be posting images beginning next week.

    • Thank you! I enjoyed joining in the fun. I’ll look forward to seeing photos from the IPhone 6. I would like to upgrade my phone but honestly, other than photo quality, my 4 is still really a great phone. In NZ, the new phones are over $1000 and I could buy a really nice digital camera upgrade for that. I look forward to your new photos.

      • Oh my, that’s unbelievable. The iPhone 4 is good. You can experiment. If you take the case off your husband’s iPhone 5. You also can wait until the new version comes out, and buy the iPhone 6. They are usually greatly reduced. See you soon.

      • My husband said the same about taking the case off. He doesn’t care about taking photos most of the time. However, discovering that macros are possible, he has realised that he can get photos of his baby oysters for our business. This was a fun discovery. 😃

      • Hint: watch the light, and make sure that you steady the iPhone as much as possible. It’s best to have a tripod, which you can purchase (of course). Otherwise lean the iPhone against a base or your body against a stationary object.

    • Thank you- it is amazing, Jenny. Technology is amazing. I was born in the 60’s and I remember my mom using the old, old cameras with the eye piece on the top (you looked down into it) and she would advance the film with a hand crank. The digital age is fascinating.

  7. Dee, I think your photos are great and you don’t need a new phone until you actually need/want one! Super job! BTW, do you have an editing app? I use Picasa 3, which is absolutely free (my favorite price.) Are you in New Zealand? My husband and I are planning an extended vacation there sometime during the end of 2015, so if you are, perhaps we could meet for coffee…or to take some photos. 🙂

    • Janet, I was so stunned by your beautiful photo the other day. It just never occurred to me that my phone would take such nice macros because normal photos are so grainy. My day was made with your inspiration. You know the quotes that remind us how simple it is to make a person’s day? That day was certainly brighter…which may seem silly but simple pleasures really do mean a lot to me. Thank you for complimenting the photos.

      My brother-in-law passed down his Mac computer to me about 3 months ago. I have IPhoto on it. I had Picasa 3 on my laptop but haven’t looked into it for the Mac as I have been trying to relearn everything I knew about computers.☺️ in the meantime, I have been trying out Apps for my IPad and phone. I really like Photoshop Express (it’s free) and Fotor (also free). I have Camera+, Snapseed and VSCOcam but haven’t used them as much these days as the other two. I also use Phonto and Marksta.

      I read that you were planning a visit to NZ and was going to ask if it was a future plan or if you had already been. Yes, I am in NZ. I have been here for almost 12 years now. I live at the bottom of the South Island where the road ends. When you come to NZ, if you are planning to come to the end of the road (Bluff) or even Queenstown (two hours from here), I’d love to meet you for coffee, taking photos, dinner…whatever we can fit in. That would be lovely!

      • We plan to be in NZ for at least two months if all works as planned and would love to get together. Perhaps we can email and talk about it and you can tell me places you think we should see.

        Bill wants to get me a Mac but I’ve been resisting because of the cost. The upside would be that all my iPhone and iPad things would sync, which would be lovely. Before I got my iPhone in December, I took almost all my blog photos with my iPad which, although much larger and so somewhat less easy to use, takes amazing photos, too

        So happy I could make your day and looking forward to meeting you next year!

      • That sounds like a great plan. If you have never been to New Zealand, you will love it. It’s stunningly beautiful. Remember our seasons are just the opposite to the Americas so the best weather is usually December – February.

        I really like the Mac now that I am getting used to it but it took some time. Simple things like right click, copy and paste nearly drove me nuts at first. I did a lot of googling. I still have a few functions that I would like someone to sit down and teach me the easiest way to preform them but Im getting. The sync function is amazing. Interestingly enough, I have taken many photos with me Ipad. I need to work with it…hmmm…I forget about it sometimes. lol

        I would love to email. I will look forward to meeting you in person.
